Joey Hansom is a polite Midwestern boy who formally studied music, but his real education took place concurrently working at Ghostly International, hosting a radio show at the campus station and going out to Detroit clubs on the weekends. These combined experiences prompted him to learn to mix records, and before long he ditched the U.S. for Berlin with not much more than a suitcase full of vinyl.
Within a couple years, this Hansom fellow found himself playing in some of the city’s top clubs like Cookies, Ritter Butzke and Schwuz, sharing the decks with the likes of Tiefschwarz, Optimo‘s J.G. Wilkes and Daniel Wang, his fairy godmother. Joey dexterously blends together disco, house and pop from the last several decades – basically any kind of dance music with a semblance of melody or song structure, disregarding the distinction between underground and mainstream.
Joey’s latest focus is songwriting and production work for his own music projects and for other Berlin-based performers. Outside of music, he contributes to Catch Fire and hosts “Magazine Surgery”, a mobile collage-making workshop.
